1. Calibration Settings

The first major step in setting up your steering wheel is to calibrate it.

This process ensures that your wheel is working properly and that the game is reading your inputs correctly and translating them into in-game action.

As you can see from the screenshot below, we recommend setting saturation and dead zone to zero since they will give you the most precise control over your car.

Most professional F1 sim racers have the same philosophy when it comes to saturation: the less you have, the better.

  • Steering Deadzone = 0
  • Steering Linearity = 0
  • Steering Saturation = 0
  • Throttle Deadzone = 0
  • Throttle Linearity = 0
  • Throttle Saturation = 0
  • Brake Deadzone = 0
  • Brake Linearity = 0
  • Brake Saturation = 0

A dead zone is a small area around the center of your wheel where the game doesn’t register any input. This can make the steering input less precise and at the same time less realistic.

2. Vibration settings

Another important aspect of the steering wheel setup is vibration. These settings will determine how much feedback you get from the road surface and how strong the force feedback is.

To adjust the vibration settings in F1 2022, go to the “Edit” tab in the wheel options menu and select “Vibration & Force Feedback“.

From there, you can adjust the overall strength of the vibration, as well as the individual settings for each type of vibration. Those include:

  • On track effects
  • Off-track effects
  • Rumble strip effects

As with the FFB settings, it’s important to find a proper balance with the vibration settings. If the vibration is too strong, it can be difficult to control the car.

Conversely, if the vibration is too weak, you might not feel enough feedback from the car, thus making it less realistic.

3. Force Feedback Settings

After you’ve calibrated your wheel and figured out your vibration setup, it’s time to adjust the force feedback settings.

These settings determine how much force you feel through the steering wheel when driving.

It’s always important to find a good tradeoff between all the FFB settings.

If the FFB is too strong, it can be tough to control the car properly.

Conversely, if the FFB is too weak, you might not feel enough feedback from the car.

As you can imagine, high-end steering wheels like the Sim Cube and Fanatec Podium F1 will require different settings from the low-end Logitec G29 or G920.

Here’s a great rule of thumb: the more advanced the steering, the less FFB strength needed and vice versa.

High end wheels (Fanatec DD1, Podium F1 DD2, Accuforce, Simucube, etc…)

  • Vibration & FFB Strength: 70 to 75
  • On Track Effects: 0 to 5
  • Rumble Strip Effects: 0
  • Off Track Effects: 0
  • Wheel Damper: 0
  • Understeer Enhance: On
  • Maximum wheel rotation: 300°

Mid-range and belt-driven wheels (Fanatec CSL & Clubsport, Thrustmaster T300 RS, etc..)

  • Vibration & FFB Strength: 75 to 85
  • On Track Effects: 5 to 10
  • Rumble Strip Effects: 10
  • Off Track Effects: 20
  • Wheel Damper: 0
  • Understeer Enhance: On
  • Maximum wheel rotation: 300°

Entry-level wheels (Logitech, Thrustmaster T150, Logitech G29 & G929 etc…)

  • Vibration & FFB Strength: 85 to 90
  • On Track Effects: 10 to 20
  • Rumble Strip Effects: 15
  • Off Track Effects: 25
  • Wheel Damper: 15
  • Understeer Enhance: On
  • Maximum wheel rotation: 270°

4. General settings Tips

Here’s a general tip to keep in mind when setting up your steering wheel:

Make sure you have the latest drivers and firmware installed for your wheel.

And finally remember that for all setups, “Vibration and Force Feedback” should be ON at any give time.

That’s because the FFB signals will add to the vibrations and give you a more realistic feel for the car.

And as you can imagine, that will help you drive better and faster.

Conclusion

That’s all there is to know about how to set up your steering wheel in F1 2022. Just remember to find a good balance between all the different settings, and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a top-tier F1 driver.
