Can travel insurance deny pre existing conditions?
While most travel insurance policies exclude pre-existing conditions from medical expenses and evacuation coverage, you may be able to obtain coverage with a pre-existing conditions waiver.
Pre-existing medical condition waiver: If you purchase your policy within a set timeframe, you insure the full nonrefundable costs of the trip and you're able to travel on the date of purchase, this waives any pre-existing condition exclusions. There is typically no extra cost for the waiver.
Under the Affordable Care Act, health insurance companies can't refuse to cover you or charge you more just because you have a “pre-existing condition” — that is, a health problem you had before the date that new health coverage starts.
Note that international travel health insurance enrollment is not subject to medical underwriting, so you can't be denied for pre-existing conditions; however, be aware that pre-existing conditions are not covered.
A pre-existing condition is an illness, injury or medical concern that has included exams, treatments or a change in prescribed medication within 60 to 180 days of purchasing a travel insurance policy. The condition doesn't have to be diagnosed formally to be considered a pre-existing condition.
Conditions which may not be covered
Conditions like terminal illness, the need for oxygen, pending surgery, chronic lung disease, cardiovascular disease, specific types of cancer, congestive heart failure, and recurring pain are generally excluded from coverage.
However, some policies have a look-back period of 60 to 180 days. If the preexisting ailment, injury or illness has changed or worsened in that period, or you've received care for it, an insurer can deny the waiver and won't cover your preexisting condition.
A health problem, like asthma, diabetes, or cancer, you had before the date that new health coverage starts. Insurance companies can't refuse to cover treatment for your pre-existing condition or charge you more.
What are pre-existing medical conditions? A pre-existing medical condition (PEMC) is an illness or injury you had before your policy began or was renewed. Examples of pre-existing medical conditions include, diabetes, asthma, high cholesterol or a long-term back condition.
Holidaymakers often ask: 'Is high blood pressure a pre-existing medical condition for travel insurance? ' The answer is simple – high blood pressure is classed as a pre-existing medical condition, so you do need to tell your insurance provider when applying for a policy.
How do you avoid pre-existing condition exclusion?
If your health plan is fully compliant with the ACA and obtained in either the individual/family market or the employer-sponsored market, you no longer need to worry about pre-existing condition exclusion periods.
You can get travel insurance with a heart condition, although it can be challenging. Look for insurers that include cover for pre-existing conditions and check if yours is included in their cover. You can also search out specialist providers who offer policies for more serious conditions.
How are pre-existing conditions determined? A pre-existing condition is a health issue that required diagnosis or treatment prior to an applicants' enrollment in a health plan.
The time period during which a health plan won't pay for care relating to a pre-existing condition. Under a job-based plan, this cannot exceed 12 months for a regular enrollee or 18 months for a late-enrollee.
Declinable Pre-existing Conditions
Insurers maintained lists of health conditions for which applicants would routinely be denied coverage. Declinable conditions included AIDS/HIV, congestive heart failure, diabetes, epilepsy, severe obesity, pregnancy, and severe mental disorders.
Defining a pre-existing condition
Insurers vary in how they define “stable period of health” (anywhere from 30 days to a year), during which a condition hasn't become worse or, for example: A physician hasn't prescribed any investigative tests, new treatment, or change in treatment.
Can I get travel insurance with high cholesterol? The short answer is, yes! Although high cholesterol is often seen as a minor condition, it's important to declare it on your travel insurance policy in case of any linked conditions.

Pregnancy before enrollment is also considered pre-existing and chronic. Other less severe conditions such as acne, asthma, anxiety, and sleep apnea may also qualify.
When to buy travel insurance can depend on the trip or trips you're taking and the kind of policy you choose to suit them. Usually, though, it's best to get cover in place for your holiday as soon as you've booked or made a financial commitment to it.
How long should your travel insurance cover?
Duration of travel insurance coverage
The duration of your travel insurance coverage depends on the type of policy you choose: Single trip cover ends on the day you are due to return home from the trip in question. Annual multi-trip cover lasts for 12 months from the start date you chose for your policy.
Please note there's a limit to the length of time you can spend away on any individual trip. All Post Office Travel insurance policies cover you up to a maximum of 31 days. If you're going to be away for longer, you can add our trip extension cover.
Introduction. According to a new analysis by the Department of Health and Human Services, 50 to 129 million (19 to 50 percent of) non-elderly Americans have some type of pre-existing health condition. Up to one in five non-elderly Americans with a pre-existing condition – 25 million individuals – is uninsured.
Existing is a certain thing that is present nowadays and can be seen in present time. Preexisting refers to something that has existed a long time ago, and forgotten, and has existed once more in our present time.
A pre-existing condition is a medical illness or injury that was diagnosed or treated before an accident occurred. Most often, a pre-existing condition refers to chronic or long-term conditions such as arthritis or chronic back pain.
