Are banks in trouble?
Banks are in limbo without a crucial lifeline. Here's where cracks may appear next. The forces that consumed three regional lenders last March have left hundreds of smaller banks wounded, as merger activity — a key potential lifeline — has slowed to a trickle.

---|---|---|

Your money is safe in a bank with FDIC insurance. A bank account is typically the safest place for your cash, since banks can be insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured institution, per ownership category.
2024 in Brief
There are no bank failures in 2024. See detailed descriptions below.
For the most part, if you keep your money at an institution that's FDIC-insured, your money is safe — at least up to $250,000 in accounts at the failing institution. You're guaranteed that $250,000, and if the bank is acquired, even amounts over the limit may be smoothly transferred to the new bank.
- First Republic Bank (FRC) . Above average liquidity risk and high capital risk.
- Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) . Above average capital risk.
- KeyCorp (KEY) . Above average capital risk.
- Comerica (CMA) . ...
- Truist Financial (TFC) . ...
- Cullen/Frost Bankers (CFR) . ...
- Zions Bancorporation (ZION) .
If the bank fails, you'll get your money back. Nearly all banks are FDIC insured. You can look for the FDIC logo at bank teller windows or on the entrance to your bank branch. Credit unions are insured by the National Credit Union Administration.
Banking regulation has changed over the last 100 years to provide more protection to consumers. You can keep money in a bank account during a recession and it will be safe through FDIC and NCUA deposit insurance. Up to $250,000 is secure in individual bank accounts and $500,000 is safe in joint bank accounts.
In short, if you have less than $250,000 in your account at an FDIC-insured US bank, then you almost certainly have nothing to worry about. Each deposit account owner will be insured up to $250,000 — so, for example, if you have a joint account with your spouse, your money will be insured up to $500,000.
The bottom line is that your money should be safe at your bank, although you might consider spreading your wealth around to multiple banks if you have more than $250,000 in any one bank account.
Which banks are going under?
The collapses of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in March 2023—then the second- and third-largest bank failures in U.S. history—took consumers by surprise. Subsequently, three more banks failed in 2023: First Republic Bank in May, Heartland Tri-State Bank in July and Citizens Bank of Sac City in November.
The biggest laggard in the KRE is New York Community Bancorp which has tumbled more than 71% this year. Metropolitan Bank Holding Corp ., Kearny Financial , Columbia Banking System and Valley National Bancorp are down more than 30% in that time period.
Generally, credit unions are viewed as safer than banks, although deposits at both types of financial institutions are usually insured at the same dollar amounts. The FDIC insures deposits at most banks, and the NCUA insures deposits at most credit unions.
If your bank closes, the FDIC will either try to move your money to another bank in good standing or mail you a check for up to the insured amount. If it doesn't move your money, the bank should mail you a check within two business days of closing.
Uninsured deposits.
Account holders who have uninsured deposits (that is, deposits over the amount insured by the FDIC) could ultimately recover all or a portion of those funds as their failed bank's assets are sold off, though this could take months or longer.

Based on the analysis of Bank of America's financial health, risk profile, and regulatory compliance, we can conclude that the bank is relatively safe from any trouble or collapse.
Your money is safe at Capital One
The FDIC insures balances up to $250,000 held in various types of consumer and business deposit accounts.
However, if you owe money to the bank, they can take legal action to recover the debt. This can include filing a lawsuit against you, obtaining a judgment, and garnishing your wages or bank account. In such cases, the bank can freeze your account and seize funds to satisfy the decision.
Can the FDIC run out of money?
Still, the FDIC itself doesn't have unlimited money. If enough banks flounder at once, it could deplete the fund that backstops deposits. However, experts say even in that event, bank patrons shouldn't worry about losing their FDIC-insured money.
Cash equivalents are financial instruments that are almost as liquid as cash and are popular investments for millionaires. Examples of cash equivalents are money market mutual funds, certificates of deposit, commercial paper and Treasury bills. Some millionaires keep their cash in Treasury bills.
Unless your bank has set a withdrawal limit of its own, you are free to take as much out of your bank account as you would like.
The amount of cash you can withdraw from a bank in a single day will depend on the bank's cash withdrawal policy. Your bank may allow you to withdraw $5,000, $10,000 or even $20,000 in cash per day. Or your daily cash withdrawal limits may be well below these amounts.
They are able to levy up to the total amount you owe in back taxes, and the bank must comply. For many individuals, this might mean seizing everything in their entire bank account. The only way you are able to release a levy due to hardship is if you make a satisfactory resolution.
