The Best Breakfast Spots in the City

Café Palmenhaus

Located right next to the Hofburg, the Imperial Castle, the Palmenhaus houses both a truly lovely botanical garden with hundreds upon hundreds of stunning butterflies, as well as a really tasty café, restaurant and bar. Whether you sit out front during the warmer months and watch the people in the Burggarten park, or you’re on one of the tables indoors and watch the beautiful big butterflies flutter past the big glass-divider, breakfasting in the Palmenhaus is an experience you won’t ever regret!

Clementine im Glashaus

A true jack of all trades, the Clementine, located in the name-giving glasshouse of the Palais Coburg, offers a variety of breakfasts ranging from low-carb brekkie with smoked salmon to a traditional Viennese breakfast to incredibly tasty waffles topped with syrup and berries. This, most certainly, is a place to try.

Das Bootshaus

This venue is a real treat on warm and sunny weekend mornings. Located at the Alte Donau, an erstwhile side arm of the Danube, this lovely restaurant is the newcomer in town. It is run by the Landtmann crowd, and serves up a real tasty breakfast that leaves nobody wanting. There’s all of the Viennese classics (from eggs to jams to meat cuts) and then there’s some real Oriental-inspired breakfast combos that include treats like Baba ghanoush and hummus. The Bootshaus is the perfect place to stay, enjoy and while away a few hours.

Do & Co. Albertina

The Do & Co is one of the first addresses in Vienna when it comes to food, and the venue located in the Albertina building is no exception. Breakfasts here are scrumptious, rich, versatile and always tasty. The Do & Co serves traditional classics as well as modern interpretations and always has an eye on offering the best ingredients available.

Erich

Erich is the place to breakfast for all of you who love their meals to be individual. Here, you are not only encouraged, but actually required to mix and match your very own perfect breakfast. Starting from an egg- or vegan base you can create your perfect meal(s) by adding yummy delicacies like little sausages, grilled mushrooms, bacon, cheese, veggies, and so much more. Freiraum

The Freiraum on Mariahilfer Straße does young and trendy breakfasts like nowhere else. And what’s more? They understand that breakfasting outside your own home usually is a communal event, and so you have the choice between single person, 2 person, and 4 person breakfast options. But that’s not all, no – there’s every imaginable breakfast dish and then some as stand-alone orders. And for everyone who loves to enjoy a real varied breakfast with many components, there’s also the Frühstücks-Box, the breakfast box, that builds a solid basis to whatever you may or may not want to add on to the wide choice it offers.

Haas & Haas

The Haas & Haas Teahouse might not be the first location that comes to mind when thinking about breakfasts in Vienna. Particularly since, for most of us, coffee, rather than tea is the default hot drink in the morning. Breakfasts at Haas & Haas is something everyone who has lived in the city for long enough will have at least heard of – it’s that legendary. Most of all because, in keeping with their incredible selection of international teas, they serve the iconic national breakfasts of nearly all countries they also import teas from. Which means that you can get your standard English breakfast here just as much as you can get a Chinese one, noodles and all.

Hildebrandt Café

the Hildebrandt, located in the Volkskundemuseum, is a real treat for the senses. Not only is the breakfast incredibly good (don’t miss out on their Schmuusies, i.e. their smoothies!, nor on their stack of waffles!), nor should you miss out on giving one of their creative coffee creations a try (how about a beetroot latte?). And don’t miss out on their truly spectacular cakes either. Or their regular menu (no worries, the food is good enough to easily while away the hours between when you sat down for breakfast and when they start serving lunch!). Oh and then there’s the café itself and it’s lovely boutique interior… but adequately talking about that would take a whole other post – so just go and see for yourself!

Hotel Daniel – Daniel Bakery

Part of the stylish hotel Daniel, the Daniel Bakery is a trendy hot-spot for everyone who loves breakfast and brunch. In terms of prices the breakfast buffet may find itself in the upper tier, but the quality (and freshness) of the goods on offer very much makes up for that. Extra fun fact? The honey served is sourced from the in-house bees living on the 7th floor. Extra tip? Get there early on weekends and you might get lucky and bag the swing hammock for yourself!

Joseph Brot

What started out as a single, hip bakery by now is a true Viennese institution much beloved by both old and young. Three of their venues have a little bistro attached and these -for many Viennese- a the location of their very own breakfast nirvana. And rightly so. The hipster (sorry, but it still has that vibe – in the best sense ever!) venue serves everything from Viennese classics (including Semmerl and Kipferl, obviously) to their very own creations – and impresses with the spectacular selection of creative breads that have made them so famous so quickly. What we like best? The regularly changing breakfast creations that make you want to come back again and again and again.

La Mercerie

The charming café brings a little bit of Paris into our city. Here, everything is as French as it can be – the coffees, the pastries (the pain au chocolat is to die for!), and the breakfast selection. The French know how to live, and with this little gem there is the perfect spot for us Viennese to get in the mood and inhale some joie de vivre.

Meierei Diglas im Türkenschanzpark

The Meierei Diglas is a real institution. Everyone, whether old or young, living in the vicinity (or, the city, really) loves to flock to this lovely place to eat and while away a few hours. And the beauty of the surrounding Türkenschanzpark doesn’t hurt, either. Whether you come in the morning, or later in the day, the food served here is always solid, but we enjoy the breakfasts on offer the most. (As do so many, particularly on sunny days, so be prepared to wait for a table!)

Meierei im Stadtpark

There’s breakfast, and then there’s legendary breakfast – and the Meierei im Stadtpark definitely serves the latter. Whether its their buttermilk pancakes, their preserved peach with poppy seed brittle, or their famous cheese cart, everything on the breakfast menu deserves (and gets) the highest praise. Dishes are creative, modern, and always surprising – and they taste like nowhere else in this world.

Motto am Fluss

Located right at the Donaukanal, this beautiful venue offers great views of the water below. The hip location offers a real good breakfast menu that covers the classics, but also surprises with a lot of new creations. Don’t expect to recognise any names, though: a (mostly) traditional Viennese breakfast is called the Heimathafen (home port), for example. Items on the menu you definitely have to try? The Sweet Sweet Potato (yum!) and the All Day Breakfast Sandwich (everything you love in a hearty breakfast packed into one sandwich – we approve!).

NENI am Naschmarkt

As the name already gives away, the NENI is located in the middle of the bustling, lively Naschmarkt, and therefore a well-beloved meeting spot of Vienna’s foodies. The family owned and run restaurant (Haya Molcho and her sons are the perfect hosts in all of their venues and enterprises!) brings a bit of Israel and therefore the sun into our lives. The Israeli-inspired breakfast choices are only topped by the staff’s incomparable hospitality, and we couldn’t love it more! (Special tip? As great as the more oriental cuisine is as a whole, what this breakfast-lover can’t get enough of are NENI’s Apple Cinnamon Crepes!)

Ramasuri

The perfect breakfast location for everyone who worships the sun. The Ramasuri has set up in one of the most idyllic corners of the city and boasts a garden that you just can’t help but love. And it’s guaranteed to be sun-flooded throughout the whole time breakfast is served. As is befitting of the gorgeous location, breakfast here is just phenomenal! The Ramasuri serves a wide variety of breakfasts that cover all bases – whether you prefer a classic, something fancy, something vegan or something super-healthy, there’s something on the menu for you. Our fave? The Fluffy Salmon.

Salettl-Pavillon

The Salettl is one of Vienna’s most classic breakfast spots. Located up the hill in the 19th district, this small, somewhat rickety venue offers great views, a thoroughly charming atmosphere and spectacular breakfast feasts. There’s one thing we can promise with 100% certainty: who comes to the Salettl leaves with a full stomach and a happy heart. It’s old-school Viennese, it’s charming, and it’s the perfect place to end a long night out and later start the new day with a late-late breakfast. A must-have-been-at-least-once spot for every true Viennese and everyone who aspires to become one!

The Guesthouse

Breakfasting at the Guesthouse Vienna is a true experience. Everything on the menu there is of top-most quality, perfectly prepared, beautifully arranged, and professionally served. Add in the fact that they have an in-house bakery and you know that a) bread and rolls are just to die for, and b) the smell that lingers in the venue just adds another layer of utter perfection to the breakfast experience. That being said, there’s a slight rub: prices are, as you might expect, a bit on the higher side. But the quality of the food and portion sizes absolutely makes up for that, we think. (And also, when and where else do you get the chance to watch people slurp oysters and sip champagne for breakfast?! Exactly!)

Ulrich

What is not to love about the Ulrich? Literally the brother venue of the Erich we’ve already mentioned above, this restaurant serves a truly magical breakfast. Unlike at the Erich, here you get to chose from an extensive set breakfast menu, but don’t worry, all tastes and preferences are more than covered here. There’s great breakfast combinations that hit every craving, and then there’s an extensive choice of egg-dishes, fruit and grain based bowls, and extras to create your unique perfect breakfast. The perfect choice? The Tabula Rasa that hits both savoury and sweet cravings in one single order.

Vollpension

The idea behind the Vollpension alone would be enough to guarantee it a spot on this list, even if the breakfasts served had been only half as delicious as they actually turned out to be. In a world where individuality is prime currency and family time is often waylaid by career, overstuffed schedules, other social engagements and (all too often) the very simple fact that you live somewhere else entirely than the rest of your family, the Vollpension has created a space where the old can and do find purpose, where the young are enveloped in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, and where everybody finds joy in granny’s (or gamp’s) public living room. All cakes and goodies on offer are baked by the grannies and grandpas on the team, all food are served bei the lovely old ladies and gentlemen bustling through the café and there’s always time for a smile, a joke, a pat on the shoulder or a good tip that only the older generation can provide us with. And as if this wasn’t enough on it’s own already, breakfast here are just perfect. The range of breakfast choices is suuuuuuuuuper wide and individually adaptable, there are some real gems and the names alone are worth a visit. Trust us – you won’t ever regret coming here!

Wirr am Brunnenmarkt

Let us say just one thing: super-XL rooftop sun terrace! If for nothing else, consider choosing this venue for that single aspect alone. But, actually and unsurprisingly, the Wirr has a lot more going for itself than just a great terrace (and lovely Schanigarten, as well as super cosy interior dining room) – and that’s its breakfast. We love, love, love the breakfast choices on the menu, all of which are just yummy, some of which are unique in the sense that we haven’t seen these exact combinations elsewhere in the city, yet (take the Ländlefrühstück, for example). It’s a great place to be, and we particularly enjoy the large weekend brunch spread for two as it covers all bases taste-wise and leaves nothing to be desired.

The “True” Viennese Experience:

If you’re craving a real Wiener Frühstück (i.e. a Viennese Breakfast, typically consisting of two (usually fresh and crunchy) bread rolls (Semmel) (or one bread roll and one slice of bread), butter, jam, a soft-boiled egg, coffee (or tea), and a small glass of orange juice), then any of the traditional Viennese coffee houses will be your best bet. Most of Vienna’s luxury hotels are open to external breakfast guests (often in their cafés) as well. Make sure to not miss out on a true Wiener Frühstück – it’s a classic for a reason!
