Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category State Capitals) for Monday, January 8, 2024 (Season 40, Game 86):

The 2 closest state capitals, at about 40 miles apart, one was founded by someone no longer allowed in the other

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Randall Rayford, a solar project developer from Houston, Texas (Friday’s total: $0)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Monday, January 8, 2024 (1)
Michael Cavaliere, a consultant from New York, New York (Friday’s total: $6,600)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Monday, January 8, 2024 (2)
Matt Harvey, a healthcare administrator from Providence, Rhode Island (Friday’s total: $10,000)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Monday, January 8, 2024 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After a Triple Stumper Final Jeopardy on Friday, Matt Harvey still holds a slim lead at the midway point of this two-day total-point final over Michael Cavaliere, with Randall Rayford having to come back from $0. However, Matt’s lead is small enough that absolutely anyone can still win today if things break in their direction. Remember, today’s scores are added to Friday’s to determine the overall winner.

Another reminder that I have started a Sunday mailbag column where I answer fan & viewer questions regarding the show. If you have a question, feel free to send it to mailbag@thejeopardyfan.com!

In case you were wondering what happened to the mailbag column yesterday: I didn’t have any answers ready to publish, so nothing was published. (There are some other issues going on behind-the-scenes here, but I’m not ready to speak about those issues publicly as of yet.)

If you’re looking for a quick rundown of what happened last week, I write a weekly recap column for Geeks Who Drink’s Questionist, released every Sunday. Yesterday’s column was titled “Hollywood Shootout”. Questionist also has a newsletter that you can sign up for!

Correct response: What are Providence, Rhode Island & Boston, Massachusetts?

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

For advocating for the separation of church and state and advocating against colonists’ having confiscated land from area natives, Roger Williams was charged with and convicted of sedition and heresy, and was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony (and Boston). In response, he founded a colony at Providence, Rhode Island, as a place for religious liberty.

The second-closest state capitals from each other are Dover, Delaware and Annapolis, Maryland, about 55 miles from each other.

I really like the fact that the show included “one was founded by someone no longer allowed in the other” in this clue—to a player (or a viewer) who is familiar with the colonial history of Rhode Island (and most players absolutely should be), that should immediately and quickly place them in the correct area of the country.

Double Jeopardy saw Matt and Michael both pick up Daily Doubles. While he thought it terrifying, Michael did make it a True Daily Double when he needed to, and that gave him the advantage going into Final!

Matt $18,800 + $18,800 = $37,600 + $10,000 = $47,600 ($35,000) (What are Boston + Providence?)
Michael $29,200 – $12,000 = $17,200 + $6,600 = $23,800 ($20,000) (What are Carson City + Salt Lake City)

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • With how the rest of the game turned out, I think we can safely say that any potential controversy over the first Daily Double (and who might have gotten to play it because of the reversal) can be safely rendered moot.
  • Today’s box score: January 8, 2024 Box Score.

(Scores: Michael $29,200 ($6,600) Matt $18,800 ($10,000) Randall $3,000 ($0))
